Most people recognize Rob Dyrdek as “that skateboarding guy from MTV.” But in recent years, the actor has proved to be a bonafide business mogul. When I interviewed him, he revealed the strategies that got him from TV talent to running the show…
I have been interested in being on television for a long time. For that reason, I asked Rob Dyrdek how he got his first show on MTV.
To that, the reality personality replied
I JUST GOT LUCKY.
But a few moments later, he gave me the full story.
As a pro skater, Dyrdek had a partnership with DC shoes. For his signature shoe promo, he came up with a creative skit where he had a personal bodyguard.
The concept was with a bodyguard, he could skateboard anywhere without being kicked out. The humorous sketch got the attention of the producers of “Jackass,” and the rest is history.
Despite his success, Rob Dyrdek didn’t want to be on MTV forever…
“I swore I wouldn’t be on MTV when I’m 40” — Rob Dyrdek
The “Ridiculousness” star filmed so many episodes collectively, that MTV can play them in syndication for years to come…
However, Rob Dyrdek found that he had many accomplishments, but no destination.
I WAS LOST AND CONFUSED IN 2012 BECAUSE I WAS SO AMBITIOUS. I STARTED MULTIPLE COMPANIES, A PROFESSIONAL SKATEBOARD LEAGUE, AND MULTIPLE TELEVISION SHOWS… MAKING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS… HOPING ONE OF THESE THINGS WOULD BE BIG ENOUGH THAT IT WOULD DEFINE ME. THEN, I WOULD HAVE HAPPINESS, BALANCE, AND PEACE.
At that point, the future entrepreneur realized a few things.
- He needed to understand MONEY.
- He had to know WHY he wanted to make it.
- And, he had to define what he wanted his LIFE to look like.
Alongside that understanding, Rob shared with me that he figured out how to design an extraordinary life…
“Start at the end again, and again, and again.”
Rob Dyrdek is grateful and appreciative of his success with MTV. But for a while, he had gotten into a personal rut…
Until he decided to reverse-engineer his life.
WHAT I IMPLORE EVERY ENTREPRENEUR TO THINK ABOUT IS WHAT YOU WANT YOUR LIFE TO LOOK LIKE. WHAT’S THE VISION FOR YOUR LIFE? THEN, HOW DOES YOUR BUSINESS IDEA INTEGRATE INTO THAT?
Since taking that approach, Drydek has co-founded and partnered with 18 brands. He has also gone on to produce television and invests in multi-family real estate investing.
I was inspired by Rob Dyrdek story which started with skateboarding on MTV to living his definition of success.
May you do the same and be great,
