Under the best of circumstances, it can be hard to keep a promise — especially a life-changing one. Nonetheless, I made a serious commitment to myself on New Year’s Day 25 years ago. And further, I’ve never broken it. This is my story…

Before we talk about the night I made that fateful decision, we need to go back a few years prior…

When I was 14 years old, I tragically lost my best friend in a house fire. Because she lived next door to me, I had to watch helplessly as it unfolded.

No one should have to see something so terrible — especially at such a young age. As you can imagine, it affected me negatively and I started making poor choices…

NAMELY, I STARTED SELF-MEDICATING WITH DRUGS AND ALCOHOL.

I did this for many, many years after that incident. That is until I decided to break the cycle of self-hatred and self-sabotage…

I can now proudly say that the last time I ever took a drug was December 31, 1999. That makes this New Year’s the 25th anniversary of that pledge.

But, how do I keep that promise without fail for such a long time?

The Secret Behind How I Keep This Important Promise

Once I realized my self-worth, I was able to make other conclusions about drugs. One of those false beliefs was that I needed substances to have fun or feel alive…

Additionally, I discovered that no chemical could make the pain I experienced truly vanish. I needed to tackle the pain head-on to finally move past it.

By doing this, my ability to keep this promise has remained rock-solid.

Sure, there have been times this 25-year-old resolution has been harder to keep than others. However, my self-worth and purpose have pulled me forward into the bigger things that I know I’m meant for.

May you have yours lead you to the best year ever in 2024.
