I don’t care what your company does — the only business you’re in is the People Business. These are the three questions you should always be asking to align the people with the business.

As a leader, it almost seems like you spend most of your time having to align your people. While that may be easy to some, for others… It’s actually quite difficult.

And if you want to truly align your people with the objectives of your business, you’re gonna need to understand a few things.

Diverse team of happy and motivated employees that are aligned in the people business

In the People Business, it’s not “WHAT” you do

The #1 mistake I see business owners make is talking about WHAT they do. The “what” isn’t going to get your people aligned. No one cares about the what.

Of course, this doesn’t mean you should avoid the “what”. You should be GREAT at what you do, there’s no question about that.

But again, this alone won’t create the alignment that you seek.

You need to highlight “WHO”, “HOW”, and “WHY”

WHO you do it with, HOW you do it, and WHY you do it are the driving forces behind the perfect team.

You see, people don’t care about what they’re doing, they care about WHO they’re doing it with, HOW they’re doing it, and WHY they’re doing it.

Once you stop focusing on the WHAT and focus on the WHO, HOW, and WHY, I can assure you… things are going to start to change for you — in the best way possible.

Ask yourself (and your team) these 3 questions

  • Who are we?
  • What makes this worth it?
  • What gets us excited each and every day to do something bigger and better?

By asking these questions, you will begin to see that these are some of the most important things you can do for the cultural alignment of your organization and a successful team.

It’s addressing the core human energy and drive

This is what being in the people business is all about.

Once you have your WHO, HOW, and WHY… then you can start to tackle the WHAT.
