I have incredible respect for creative people. However, they don’t always know the way to earn from art. Read on to learn how to NOT be a starving artist.
Firstly, my inspiration for this subject in my Make More Money series is my wife Elena, who used to be an actress. She is the one who inspired me to figure out how to blur the lines between business and art.
For that purpose, I am going to outline how to not be a starving artist. These are the steps I suggest to creative people who want to make money from their art.
Keep your mind on the money and the money on your mind
Focusing on money sounds dirty to a lot of artists. The phrase “sell-out” comes to mind.
However, nothing else matters but lack of revenue.
You may be the best at your craft, but if you can’t sell it in high enough volumes, you’ll always be a starving artist.
For that reason, you have to put attention on making money, even with a creative profession.
Now, here’s how you earn more moolah.
More offers to unlikely people
The key to not being a starving artist is more, more, more. You have to have a variety of products to offer. For example, you could have a range of different painting sizes, if that is what you do.
The second piece to this is you have to do business with people that you wouldn’t traditionally work with. Take the painter’s example above. Who else needs paintings done?
This person’s strategy to not be a starving artist could be doing murals, selling prints, commissions, etc. Artists are creative. Now, you need to get creative with your sales and marketing.
Regardless of your niche, treat your art and yourself as a business, and promote accordingly:
- Be omnipresent on social media;
- Document your creative process and share with your community as content;
- Study successful artists and their habits;
- Invest in the training, resources, and tools you need to scale;
- Market yourself as an authority figure in the art world.
To conclude, you have to embrace the business side of art to not be a starving artist.
Making money from your hard work is nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, it is your duty.
