June is here, which means Father’s Day is right around the corner. And who better to get some guidance on raising kids than a man with SIX kids? This is parenting advice Shaq shared in a recent interview…
Not long ago, Grant sat down with the ball player and discussed Shaq’s big business moves.
In that fireside conversation, we got a small glimpse of O’Neal’s big heart. More of which he revealed to Today.com.
Shaquille O’Neal’s drill sergeant father raised him and was often very tough. Despite his strict upbringing, the former Laker uses a gentler parenting style…
“I GREW UP IN A VERY TOUGH ENVIRONMENT … A LOT OF MY FATHER’S TACTICS WOULD BE FROWNED UPON NOW. BUT IT WORKED FOR ME. I JUST TEACH MY KIDS TO BE RESPECTFUL … AND I NEVER HAD THOSE PROBLEMS THAT MY PARENTS HAD WITH ME.”
Also, the sports star had other reasons for wanting to be the “fun parent” and creating his number one parenting rule…
#1 Piece of Parenting Advice from Shaq
As you can imagine, the center player was gone a lot — especially during basketball season…
“I WAS GONE A LOT BECAUSE OF MY JOB AND I DIDN’T ALWAYS WANT TO BE THE BAD GUY. SO I SORT OF RELINQUISHED MY POSITION AS (A DISCIPLINARIAN). I WAS THE ONE CHASING THE KIDS AROUND THE HOUSE AND TAKING THEM TO TOYS’R’US. I DIDN’T WANT TO COME HOME AFTER A BAD DAY AND GO OFF THE HANDLE.”
As a result, Shaq’s number one piece of parenting advice is “Let moms make the call.”
So, how does he think his kids turned out? He told Today all six of them are “perfect.” And if his parenting is anything like his sports or business career, we won’t argue.
Be Great,
