One of my Empire-isms is, “Find the one you trust, and build an empire.” Still, entrusting someone to share your foreseeable future with is intimidating.  So, how do you know you’ll make it as a couple once you’ve made that commitment?

First of all, it is understandable if you have cold feet…

In fact, I never wanted to get married or rely on a man for many years. Grant had to win me over. 

BUT EVEN AFTER THAT, IT TOOK A LOT OF WORK FOR GRANT AND ME TO GET WHERE WE ARE TODAY…

That being said, there are tools you can use and signs that you are going to make it as it a couple in the long run. 

Stop Comparing & Boost the Chances to Make it as a Couple

To begin with, are you measuring your relationship by your standards or someone else’s? 

I’m not even talking about just comparing yourselves to other couples, either. 

AN EQUALLY HARMFUL COMPARISON IS TO LOOK AT YOUR AND YOUR PARTNER’S PARTNERSHIP THROUGH THE LENS OF OLD IDEAS. 

As I mentioned earlier, I didn’t want to “rely on a man” because that was a belief that was instilled in me growing up. However, when I looked at it for myself, I found that it was not true for me. 

For that reason, my advice is to define what love and a successful relationship look like for you. 

Do that, and you’ll skyrocket your chances of making it as a couple. Plus, it goes hand in hand with this next tip. 

Is it REALLY “For Better or Worse”?

Now, this is the make-break point to know if you are going to make it as a couple… 

YOU HAVE TO BE WILLING TO FACE THE WORST POSSIBLE SCENARIO, NOT TAKE ON THE VICTIM MENTALITY, AND FIGHT THROUGH IT TOGETHER.

If you answered “yes” to all of the questions above, your partnership is in strong standing to weather the battles ahead. And there will be battles you’ll have to face… 

For Grant and I, that was the housing crisis of 2008. 

In that situation, it was do or die. I had to make a decision to go all-in on my husband and our marriage be and willing to fail — or retreat to lessen the blow. 

In the end, I know I made the right decision. But there is only one way to know you are doing the same… 

Whether You Make it or Not as a Couple is Up to YOU!

Finally, the only surefire way to know 100% that you’ll make it as a couple is to fully commit. 

YES, IT IS AS SIMPLE AS THAT. 

After all, if you trust this person… 

If you deem your relationship successful by your standards… 

And, you are willing to work together to overcome the biggest obstacles… 

Why wouldn’t you put all your chips on the table? 

You can have it all and build an empire, but you have to make the decision.
