On Nov 27, 2023, “Futurism” published a piece making the case that “Sports Illustrated” was deceiving readers. Specifically, the article stated SI was using AI in the magazine and presenting it as written by humans…
The sports circular denied EVERYTHING when asked for comment. But to make matters worse, it doubled down with an official statement via X (formerly Twitter).
The magazine claimed no wrongdoing and removed the questionable content. But, there were significant facts that “Sports Illustrated” was deep faking.
The Proof is in the Awkward Writing…
The first place that AI was spotted in the magazine was within the authors’ bios…
After scouring the internet, these “Sports Illustrated” writers weren’t found to exist anywhere!
Also, “Futurism” discovered this discrepancy when they found an SI contributor’s photo for sale on a portrait generator website.
While “Sports Illustrated,” asserts that this was done to protect the writer’s anonymity, this wasn’t the only proof…
Articles from the avatars included some interesting sports insights, to say the least.
A notable example from an alleged AI-generated column includes this gem:
“VOLLEYBALL CAN BE A LITTLE TRICKY TO GET INTO, ESPECIALLY WITHOUT A BALL TO PRACTICE WITH.”
With evidence like that, it is clear that there were at least some undisclosed AI essays featured in the magazine.
Nonetheless whether “Sports Illustrated” will come clean about it and recover its reputation will be up to humans…
