I, for one, am not opposed to using AI where we can — finding jobs is not one of them. Recently, companies across the internet have popped up offering bot assistance to get you hired. They offer customized resumes as well as mass application blasts…
But what’s the catch?
Before I tell you why you should look for work the old-fashioned way, let’s break down how these services work…
How AI Searches for Jobs
In a strange twist to how most people thought this AI thing would go, the bots are helping us get jobs. And I have to admit, the way they do it sounds pretty smart…
Of course, each of these business models and methods vary slightly. But overall, these tech services work like this:
- The customer pays a fee to upload their resume.
- They create a profile detailing what type of positions they’re seeking.
- AI sorts through jobs for the user to approve for submission.
- Approved openings are applied for with a resume customized with auto-generation tech.
From there, it is up to the very human HR department of wherever you’ve applied.
Granted, a tailored CV for each application would improve your chances…
As well as sending out more resumes per day…
IN THEORY.
Unfortunately, the cons significantly outweigh the benefits in this case…

However, that does not that it is perfect and can replace everything. The tech has a long way to go — and even more kinks to work out.

AI Pulls False/Outdated Information for “Tailored” Resumes
First, let’s talk about those “custom-made” cover letters and work histories.
The AI has to get the information to apply for those jobs somewhere…
Best case scenario, that data could be outdated…
IN THE WORST SITUATION, IT COULD BE STRAIGHT-UP FALSE!
Such an instance is when Business Insider correspondent, Aki Ito, tried AI job services as an experiment.
On one application the bot created, it claimed she was African-American and spoke fluent Spanish…
Neither is true.
That’s a big strike one.
Bots Apply to Subpar Positions
Another issue the BI correspondent ran into was the majority of jobs the AI served her were…
FRANKLY, NOT POSITIONS SUITED TO HER SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE.
This was especially so in the “learning phase” as Ito kept denying jobs the bot sent for her consideration.
That shows me that using artificial intelligence in the job hunt is really not saving much time…
After all, if you have to go through the listings anyway…
Then, risk having an inaccurate version of you being promoted…
It just doesn’t seem worth it.

Also, using AI to look for jobs is lazy.
What I think when I hear that someone had a bot fix up their resume…
Find the job…
Apply for it…
And, respond to recruiter…
How can I expect that candidate to give 110% in that position?
So, become real to potential employers by showing up in person, on Zoom, etc. Then, you are memorable and have a chance to be hired.
