I’ve been a business owner for a better part of my life now. I can safely — and confidently — say that no one understands leadership better than my mentor, John C. Maxwell.
Take any business that I’ve worked in or owned — I made sure to implement his teaching.
I made sure (and still do) to use his life’s work as the foundation for our organization. It’s been an incredible journey so far, and the impact of these teachings will forever leave a positive mark on me and my ability to be a better and more effective leader.
When I sat down to chat with Dr. Maxwell, I asked him a question that’d been boggling my mind…
“Why do you believe that people read and listen to your stuff… but don’t actually apply it?”
And his answer was simple.
People change themselves — John C. Maxwell
John C. Maxwell went on to explain that, for the longest time, he thought he was going to change lives. But then he realized… he doesn’t have to change anybody.
People have to change themselves.
It’s a choice. you can put a great meal in front of two people, and one can say ‘sure, i’ll take the meal’, and the other person says, ‘i’ll leave it’. what i learned was this… i am responsible to people, not for them. people are responsible for themselves and no one else.
— John C. Maxwell
Your responsibility, as a successful leader, is this…
To teach. Just like that. Your responsibility is to TEACH people leadership principles and models.
And the reason why some people do it and others don’t is because some people take responsibility while others don’t. That’s the main differentiator between the doers and the listeners. Because you can listen — but can you do it?
You gotta COMMIT to developing the culture in your company if you want to become an inspiring and remarkable leader.
In 2018, before speaking at 10X Growth Conference 3, John C. Maxwell and I got together to share our leadership tips in a livestream, which you can watch below.
