Self-Driving Car Race

For several years, there have been whispers that driverless vehicles were on the horizon. And now, that reality is closer than ever. The self-driving car race is on and here are the details on who is closest to the finish line…

What? Building Autonomous Vehicles is HARD?

Early on in the self-driving car race, investors and consumers alike were hopeful of things to come. However, both groups have been disappointed in the lack of industry growth and profitability.

Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, first announced “Full Self-Driving” models in 2018 to be launched the following year.

Yet, time passed….

Development of the technology was slow…

And finally, two years later, Musk had to admit he was nowhere near having a zero-occupant vehicle…

In the meantime, California-based company, Nuro, raised $1.5 billion in funding to enter the self-driving car race…

Who is Ahead in the Self-Driving Car Race?

Because of all of the challenges facing autonomous transport, Nuro decided to get rid of the biggest problem…

PEOPLE.

With this in mind, the tech firm moved towards using smaller vehicles to carry packages, not passengers. From this decision, Nuro has developed a golf-cart-sized robot called R2.

CNBC reports that since April, R2 has been delivering pizzas for Domino’s Pizza in Houston, Texas. And that there are plans for the next generation of R2 to make deliveries for FedEx.

Elon has criticized this Tesla competition for both not incorporating passenger transport and its use of laser technology. A beta program for Tesla’s zero-occupant car went into effect July 10th with no major updates as of this article.

So as to who is winning the self-driving car race — that is a tough call…

One has no people, but you get pizza. The other has no results as of yet. I guess it depends on how hungry you are…

Be Great,
