Laid Off From Work

Being laid off from work is never a good feeling. Trust me, I know. I got fired from McDonald’s. Nonetheless, it is important to take action immediately so you don’t stay unemployed. This article lays out the step-by-step plan to get you back into the workforce sooner rather than later…

Action Plan for Those Laid Off from Work

I’m not going to sugar-coat it. Right now, the market is a jungle out there. For example, over 250,000 tech workers were laid off from work across major companies recently.

But, if you were among them or another industry’s casualties, all is not lost.

HOWEVER, YOU GOTTA COMMIT AND TAKE YOUR NEXT STEPS — FAST.

Now is not the time to carefully plan or start saving as this AP article suggests. The key to getting back into the game is hitting the pavement in the order I’ve laid out below.

Without further ado, let’s dive in…

Spruce Up Your Resume

I have mentioned in the past I don’t put much stock into resumes. On the other hand, yours probably needs an update if you’ve just been laid off from work.

So, step number one is to add any relevant new work experience and skills. And as I wrote in my resume writing tips, only include those that show you as an asset to employers.

Additionally, customize your resume based on the job or companies you apply for. That way, you increase your chances of being hired by showcasing specific skills that company is looking for.

After this, you’ll take the next — but often overlooked — powerful step…

Tap into Your Power Base

If you play your cards right, your job search can end here. Nevertheless, people feel ashamed of being laid off from work. So, they are often reluctant to do it…

ASK THEIR NETWORK OF FRIENDS, FAMILY, AND COLLEAGUES FOR HELP FINDING A JOB!

Your network — or power base — is those who know you the best and want you to succeed. There is no reason to feel embarrassed to ask them for help.

Even if they don’t know of a specific opening, they can point you in the right direction. And all the while, don’t slow yourself down…

Maintain Your Routine after Being Laid Off from Work

It is very tempting to get a little lazy if you are not going into an office each day.

You may start sleeping in…

Staying in your pajamas…

Or, spend more and more time watching TV…

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LETHAL TO YOUR MOMENTUM IN FINDING NEW EMPLOYMENT.

My advice to you is to avoid this trap like the plague.

Get up at the same time you did to get to the office. Dress professionally. Then, you’re going to put all your energy into getting work.

Make Finding a Job Your #1 Focus

This will sound crazy at first, but hear me out. You are not unemployed…

YOUR NEW JOB IS GETTING ANOTHER JOB.

Just like I said, it is easy to get down about it and want to stay home to lick your wounds.

However, the longer the gap in your employment, the less likely you are to look like a good candidate.

So, strike while the iron is hot and you’ll more than likely find a better job faster.

Laid off from Work? Here is the Silver Lining

I know I’m telling you to do a lot when you probably don’t want to. I was fired from seven jobs myself. And, I understand that getting back out there sounds like the last thing you want to do…

BUT, PUSHING YOURSELF WHEN IT’S UNCOMFORTABLE IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE GREATS AND THE AVERAGE.

Also, I want you to consider this.

If this company laid you off, it was likely a sinking ship. You were lucky to get out of there to pursue something worthy of your talents.

Grab the opportunity to be great.
