AI Theft

Unfortunately, the number of packages stolen from U.S. front doors has only increased over the past couple of years. The problem costs millions of dollars for businesses and carrier services alike. However, new AI has been developed to prevent this type of theft…

How Common is Porch Piracy?

The following scenario may sound familiar to you…

You order something special online that you’re looking forward to…

After patiently waiting, you get an alert it has finally arrived

Then, you get to your porch or mailbox and your package is nowhere to be found.

That would make your parcel one of the 260 million stolen per year according to Safewise.

THAT AMOUNTS TO 79% OF AMERICANS BEING THE VICTIM OF PORCH PIRACY!

There has been a corresponding rise in doorbell camera sales. But it hasn’t made a significant impact on this alarming trend.

In fact, only 5% of these thieves attempt to avoid being filmed at all!

As a result, UPS has turned to AI to prevent more of this theft before the upcoming holiday season…

How AI Rates Your Likelihood of Theft

In June, UPS created its API for DeliveryDefense. Its intended use is for companies to prevent losses.

The artificial intelligence program uses data from the past two years to give locations a “delivery confidence score.”

The score ranges from one to 1,000 on how likely a building is to have a delivery stolen. President of UPS Capital, Mark Robison, explained the rating system like this…

“IF WE HAVE A SCORE OF 1,000 TO AN ADDRESS THAT MEANS THAT WE’RE HIGHLY CONFIDENT THAT THAT PACKAGE IS GOING TO GET DELIVERED. AT THE OTHER END OF THE SCALE, LIKE 100 … WOULD BE ONE OF THOSE ADDRESSES WHERE IT WOULD BE MOST LIKELY TO HAPPEN, SOME SORT OF LOSS AT THE DELIVERY POINT.”

So, the AI gives your home or office a low score — what happens to prevent theft?

Depending on this scale, businesses can choose to have deliveries made at times theft is less likely. Or, it will suggest recipients pick up their packages from official access points.

A web-based version of DeliveryDefense is set to launch on October 18, 2023. However, if you are interested in using this AI theft deterrent, it will cost you…

How Much Will It Cost to Use AI to Prevent Package Theft?

As we mentioned, porch piracy is a prevalent and pricey issue. Because of this, entrepreneurs must evaluate using this new technology for themselves.

At the moment, UPS offers the API at $3,000 a month with more expensive packages for larger companies. On the other hand, smaller businesses can get plans starting at $99 once the web version launches.

But keep one thing in mind…

Despite the AI revolution being well underway, the number one way to prevent parcel theft is still…
