It is not the best-kept secret in Hollywood that the voice of Bart Simpson is an Emmy-winning woman in power. But who is she really?

Nancy Cartwright has been the voice of Bart Simpson for over 30 years. As a result, in 1992, she won the Outstanding Voiceover Emmy for bringing the sarcastic 10-year-old to life.

Having a career and beloved role that long in show business is almost unheard of. However, she keeps her passion for the role and industry alive.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Nancy Cartwright and found out more about who she is and what she attributes her success to.

Bart Simpson was mentored by Yogi Bear

Early on, Cartwright already knew that voiceover work was her future.

“I didn’t exactly expect to get a role as a 10-year-old boy and do it for 34 years. But I had a vision when I was 16 that this is what I was going to do.”

— Nancy Cartwright in conversation with Elena Cardone

She then decided she would reach out to Daws Butler, the famous voice actor between Elroy Jetson and Yogi Bear. It didn’t matter that he was in Beverly Hills and she lived in Dayton, Ohio.

Cartwright still has cassette tapes she sent with her voice to him and his valuable feedback. She carries this dedication into her work to this day.

Spinning plates time management strategy

Currently, Cartwright founded three companies, is voicing Chuckie on the reboot of the Rugrats cartoon series, and is a grandmother.

She compared her time management style to spinning plates:

“Just as I get the last plate [one aspect of her life] going, the first is about to fall off balance. I have to go run and get it going again. It’s about compartmentalizing so I have enough time for each.”

The voice behind Bart Simpson is a true woman in power. I will leave you with her own words on what is the key to her longstanding success

“My work is not work to me. I love it so much; it gives me so much joy.”

Build an empire,

Elena Cardone
