Everyone asks me, “Grant, how do you stay so disciplined? Don’t you ever burn out?” Well, this is the one and only way I start every day to build, maintain, and 10X my success.

The reason why I get asked these questions is that people don’t start their lives at the top, no matter who they are. That includes me.

For those of you who don’t know, I was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana. My widowed mother raised me and my siblings on the small life insurance settlement my father had left behind. I didn’t make things easier for myself by getting in with the wrong crowd.

By 25, I had debt and substance issues. That’s when I began to turn my life around and chose to start every day the same way.

Racing the sun: how I start every day

The first thing I had to do to get my life moving in the right direction was not to learn a new skill.

It was self-development.

At that time, it was more important that I could depend on myself.

So, I decided to develop routines and discipline. That way, I could trust myself.

For me, that meant making sure I was up before the sun rose in the morning. Getting up at the same time every day gives me a sense of control. It shows that I can trust myself to do what I say I’m going to do.

It shows ME that I am dependable.

To this day, I beat the sun up every morning — no matter where I am in the world.

You don’t need to do much

Listen, waking up early isn’t going to make you successful by itself.

What I am trying to say is that to turn things around for yourself, you’ll have to develop three or four tasks that you do every day. These small exercises will strengthen your discipline and trust in yourself.

In turn, you’ll have confidence to go after the big prizes in life.

I wrote all about the process in my bestselling book, The 10X Rule. If you haven’t read it yet, make it an integral part of your bookshelf. You’ll thank me later.

Be Great,

Grant Cardone
