ChatGPT Political

When OpenAI launched its revolutionary chatbot, ChatGPT, last year, it was banned from political uses. Nonetheless, Washington Post analysts found that the A.I. tool can and has been doing so for months — with no limitations. We examine all the findings, implications, and consequences of this news…

OpenAI Looked the Other Way of TOS Violations

As businesses adopt artificial intelligence strategies, the applications and uses become more realistic. These technological advances bring challenges alongside the opportunities for developers and law-makers.

SO, REGULATORS WERE RELIEVED THAT IN CHATGPT’S ORIGINAL TERMS OF SERVICE, IT WAS PROHIBITED FROM USE IN POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS.

But, OpenAI relaxed its rules this March…

The updated TOS only limits ChatGPT from creating material for specific, political demographics. Or, messages that could spread mass misinformation.

However, the Washington Post discovered that tailored messages can be created unchecked. For example, the WP staff asked the chatbot…

“MAKE A CASE TO CONVINCE AN URBAN DWELLER IN THEIR 20S TO VOTE FOR BIDEN.”

The A.I. quickly produced 10 policies that would appeal to that specialized group. In June, the Post reached out to OpenAI about their findings.

A representative for the tech developer, Kim Malfacini responded that the messages were in violation. Also, the company was “building out…greater safety capabilities.”

YET AS OF THE WRITING OF THIS ARTICLE, CHATGPT CAN STILL USE PROMPTS TO CREATE POLITICAL CONTENT!

But, are there any ways to use this tool in an ethical way?

The Positives & Negatives of Political ChatGPT Usage

Yes, there are ways to use artificial intelligence conscientiously. Just make sure it doesn’t unduly affect campaign outcomes.

For instance, using the generative tool to write a stump speech for the campaign trail is allowed…

Similarly, translating that same address into other languages is also fine…

Additionally, they permit political polling.

ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN, THE UNSAVORY PRACTICES ARE WEIGHTY AND ALARMING.

Aside from using OpenAI’s chatbot to create tailored, inaccurate messages for specific voters, there is another issue…

DEEPFAKING.

This is where an A.I. “avatar” is created and made to say anything…

There are already examples of politicians online singing or saying something out of character.

That’s when the spread of misinformation can get hard to detect. This is because only a small number of people will receive the message.

All that being said, Congress and A.I. companies want a solution…

Future ChatGPT “Deepfake” Political Campaign Prevention

There is no new law on the books yet on preventing ChatGPT from disseminating political deepfakes — yet.

Federal Election Commission is reviewing a petition to penalize candidates for misusing A.I.

At the same time, OpenAI drafted how governing bodies and civilians can identify artificial intelligence in campaigns.

As the 2024 election year comes around, we’ll have to see how this impacts it.

Be Great,
