In the past, I shared advice on finding a job — whether you’re unemployed or looking to get to the next level. Despite that, I have never given any resume writing tips until now. Below are five points to consider if you want employers to take a second look at you…
Five 10X Resume Writing Tips
When I’m hiring for my companies, I will be honest with you…
I DON’T PUT TOO MUCH IMPORTANCE ON WORK HISTORIES.
In fact, I don’t even look at resumes half of the time!
However, I do understand that other employers do. Therefore, your CV must get their attention, that way you can get a job fast.
With all that in mind here are five resume-writing tips that would get my attention when recruiting…
Leave Out Unnecessary Information
Look, just because I know I need to add people, doesn’t mean I want it to take a lot of time. So number one on my list of resume writing tips is…
KEEP IT SHORT AND SWEET.
I don’t need to see things like your home address or that you were the student council president. In that same vein, graduation dates are fairly unimportant unless you just graduated.
I WANT TO BE ABLE TO SEE WHAT YOU HAVE DONE AND CAN DO AT A GLANCE.
Stick to the most recent and most relevant. That being said, there is some info that it would be stupid to leave off your resume.
Provide MULTIPLE Ways to Contact You
Now, this may not entice potential employers to give you a shot. But without these details, they won’t even have a chance.
INCLUDE EVERY WAY TO REACH YOU, STARTING WITH THE MOST IMPORTANT, CLEARLY AT THE TOP OF YOUR RESUME.
If I like what I see, then I gotta start digging around to contact you, I will move on. I know that sounds brutal. Still, you must remember that your CV is like a first impression…
You want to make things as easy and pleasant as possible for your future boss.
Include LinkedIn and Digital Portfolio
Your online presence is more important than ever — even if you are not interested in digital branding.
These days, most companies will check out your social media before they schedule an interview. So, the third of my resume writing tips again involves making the recruiter’s life easier…
ATTACH DIGITALLY OR TYPE OUT THE LINKS TO YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA PROFILES AND A PORTFOLIO OF WORK.
In particular, ensure that your LinkedIn account is there. That is the place specifically connecting with others professionally after all.
And if you don’t have an account make one, then throw it on there.
DO Write a Mission Statement
As cheesy as it seems to the younger readers of this article, it is still one of the strongest resume-writing tips I have…
START WITH A SUMMARY OF YOUR CORE VALUES, SKILL SET, AND OVERALL CAREER GOALS.
This lets the person reading your resume know immediately if you are a good fit for the role and company culture. Believe it or not, that can be senior to your abilities in some cases.
Your mission statement should be about three to five sentences, but descriptive and powerful at the same time. And don’t be afraid to make gigantic claims…
A great company won’t be intimidated by candidates with massive goals. Of course, you gotta back up talking a big game…
Give Potential Employers What They REALLY Want
At this point, you have…
Let them know a bit about who you are…
Listed every resource on your background…
And, they have the right information to contact you…
There is just one more thing…
YOU GOTTA SHOW THEM WHAT YOU CAN DO.
I am not asking you to write out your skills here, by the way. However, you should put down examples of times you got it done.
It’s even better if you can attach a monetary value to it. Nonetheless, we have to address a serious possibility…
What if you take all this advice and STILL don’t get a callback?
What to Do if These Resume Writing Tips DON’T Work
There are a plethora of reasons that a corporation won’t choose you — and nine times out of ten it ain’t you!
I am positive that I have made the mistake of passing on rockstars for ridiculous reasons. Nonetheless, that isn’t an excuse for being a victim of the situation.
At the end of the day, all the best resume-writing tips will only get you so far. Then, the real question is…
Are you willing to do WHATEVER IT TAKES to improve your life?
That means you may have to call the business to follow up on your resume. Or, you’’ have to show up physically to show you’re really committed.
Even if you don’t get that job, at least you showed up. And sooner or later, the right employer will take notice..,
