The other day, somebody asked me an interesting question.  They asked, “what does it mean to build an empire?”

When I talk about building an empire, many people think I’m talking about making money or investing in real estate. 

Of course, Grant and I love making money and buying real estate…  

But when we built our empire, we did it for much bigger reasons.

See, when you build an empire, you adopt a certain mindset. 

You expand your thinking beyond what’s “reasonable.”  You envision goals 99.9% of people would never dare to imagine.  

In fact, if you’re truly building an empire… 99.9% of people will think you’ve lost your mind.

That’s the whole point of building an empire!

Because when your goals push you to the edge of your capabilities, something amazing happens.

And you’ll leapfrog the naysayers, the doubters, and the haters who want you to think small – like they do. 

Grant and I first realized we needed to expand our thinking during the 2008 financial crisis.

We thought we had created financial security.

But when the economy went sideways, our financial safety net evaporated into thin air. 

At that moment, we had a choice. 

We could keep playing small – and pray the next crisis would go easy on us.

Or we could expand our thinking and play a bigger game…

A game which could really shield us from disaster.

When Grant and I looked around, we noticed a small group of people who rarely suffer when the economy goes bad. 

Data showed us that these were the only people who increased their wealth between 2001 and 2016.

Who were they?

They were the asset owners, the investors, and leaders of the “knowledge economy.”

In short, they were empire builders. 

And that is why Grant and I made it our mission to become empire builders, just like the wealthiest people in the world.

It’s also why we made a vow, which we’ve kept to this day.
