One of the longest-operating department stores in the country, Kmart, is shutting down its last full-size store, marking the end of an era.
So Long Kmart
Having first opened in 1899, Kmart changed the way consumers interact with large retailers. With more than 2,000 stores at its peak, the store was a household name and immediately recognizable to millions of shoppers.
Unfortunately, due to the infamously disastrous $11 billion merger between Kmart and Sears in 2005…
As well as increased competition from other stores…
Kmart began shutting down stores.
At the time, stores like Walmart and Target were revolutionary. While Kmart gained its reputation from selling home goods…
These two other companies brought in more customers because they sold home goods along with groceries and clothing all under the same roof.
Now, the chain known for its “blue light” specials is shutting down its last full-sized store in the continental United States. The company still has a Kmart operating in Guam and the US Virgin Islands…
As well as a smaller convenience store chain in Miami.
The last store, located in Bridgehampton, New York, will close its doors officially on October 20th.
Be Great,
