One of the most popular Christmas stories ever told is Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol…
And seeing as it’s the holiday season, I thought this Ebenezer Scrooge quote from the book would make a nice little gift for you:
“I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach!”
Now, in case you’re unfamiliar with the story…
Scrooge is a wealthy businessman who takes whatever he can get from the people in his community and he never gives back.
The night before Christmas, this guy is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future.
The first two ghosts (Past and Present) show him the error of his ways and the trail of destruction he’s left in his wake.
Scrooge has no friends, no respect, and no legacy…
He’s hurt and betrayed people, without remorse…
And in spite of all his wealth, his negative attitude and his lack of ambition mean he hasn’t had a positive impact on his community.
Now, notice I mentioned his lack of ambition…
Because in my opinion, you can have all the money in the world…
But true ambition… and the true success that tends to follow it… comes with chasing it all.
Wealth, health, family, community, spirituality, happiness…
There are a bunch of more things I could personally add to this list — and I know that everyone’s definition of success varies — but I think all of these elements make a person truly successful.
Scrooge has none of these success markers, except wealth…
And when the Ghost of Christmas Future finally gives this guy a terrifying glimpse into what lies ahead (the people in his town are literally celebrating his death), Scrooge is finally motivated to change for the better…
And he decides to pursue true success.
Now, I’m not saying any of us are this guy from the Christmas story…
But I think we could all do a lot worse than look at the message in the quote at the start of this article…
And take on board all of the things our past, present, and future have taught us so that we can pursue our own version of true success.
Now, you’re probably thinking…

It’s simple. You can have a vision.
You just need to imagine what you want to achieve in your life going forward…
And then do what’s necessary each and every day to make that vision of the future your reality.
