As Russian invasion intensifies, Ukraine suffers internet disruptions and power outages. Over the weekend, Elon Musk reportedly expanded coverage of SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service to provide a safe communications solution for the government and people of Ukraine.
From Russian oligarchs losing billions in one day to Belarus border talks, the Russia-Ukraine crisis continues to unfold.
As a result of the invasion, Ukraine is undergoing a loss in reliable internet access. Specifically, the South and East are the most affected regions, where the attacks have been the most intense.
In a statement for Reuters, director of internet monitoring organization NetBlocks Alp Toker explains:
“While there is no nation-scale blackout, little is being heard from the worst affected regions, and for others there’s an ever-present fear that connectivity could worsen at any moment, cutting off friends and family.”

Shortly after receiving a public plea from Ukrainian officials to help, Elon Musk responded with action.
“Starlink service is now active in Ukraine.” — Elon Musk
Saturday, February 26, Ukraine Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov took to Twitter to personally reach out to Elon Musk for support.
Fedorov specifically asked Musk to “provide Ukraine with Starlink stations and to address sane Russians to stand.”
Later on that day, Elon Musk confirmed that SpaceX’s satellite internet service Starlink “is now active in Ukraine”. The SpaceX founder and CEO also mentioned “more terminals en route”.
Engineered by SpaceX, Starlink is a satellite internet constellation that can provide global coverage. Earlier in January 2022, Musk confirmed on Twitter “1469 Starlink satellites active” and “272 moving to operational orbits”.
What’s the bigger idea behind Elon Musk supporting Ukraine with satellite internet access?
After donating billions to charity in 2021, Elon Musk continues to be an example of authentic leadership and compassion. By giving back and supporting others when help is needed the most, Musk uses his wealth and influence for good in times of crisis.
Although few possess Musk’s level of resources, every person can do their part in supporting Ukraine in any way they can.
To help the people of Ukraine, donate to any of the following organizations:
- UNICEF
- Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontieres)
- Voices of Children
- CARE — Ukraine Crisis Fund
- International Medical Corps
