3 Reasons Your Content Strategy Is Failing

Below we explain three reasons why your content marketing isn’t working. And we tell you what you can do about it.   You heard the news: Content is King! You made the blog. You pushed out a bunch of content and…nothing. Your voice fell flat. Your views dwindled…or never showed up at all. It didn’t work.   Well, luckily for you, there are some easy ways to re-evaluate what you’re doing and improve your content marketing efforts.

Here are 3 reasons your content marketing isn’t working and how you can do better next time.

Mistake #1  You don’t own your voice.

I get it- you’re writing for business folks, so you thought you needed to sound as businesslike as possible. But that’s where you went wrong. You have to be you. What’s your brand? Is it serious and traditional? Then sure, write “businesslike.” Is it young and modern? Then that won’t cut it. You need to write naturally and that means writing in your own voice.

Mistake #2  You’re a copycat.

This one is hard because there is a lot of content out there on the web. This means that your message will easily get swept into oblivion unless you give something that the rest doesn’t have. Give an old topic a new perspective, dig deeper, describe your own theories and experiences with a topic, and share your personal stories and news.

Mistake #3  You write selfishly.

Sure you think something is interesting, but does your audience? Find out what your audience wants to hear about, or where they’re confused about something, and go from there. Answer questions you know your audience is asking. And most importantly, make sure you are genuinely trying to help your audience solve a problem or meet a goal.

Is it even worth it?

Yes! It is worth it. There are many other reasons your content marketing isn’t working. If none of these reasons resonated with you, check out part 2 of why your content marketing failed. Content marketing has so much potential, but only if you create great content. Move on, start over, and make great content.

Action Plan

  1. Write in a natural voice for you.
  2. Don’t copy other content from other sources.
  3. Pay attention to what your target audience wants to hear about.
  4. Content marketing is worth it, but only if it’s great.
